What is linguistics?
Linguistics is the major scientific field that studies language, its form, its meaning, and its function. Some of its main subfields include historical linguistics, phonetics and phonology, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics and also forensic linguistics, among others.
What is Forensic Linguistics?
Forensic Linguistics (FL) is the interface between language and the law. Thus, forensic linguists analyse linguistic samples that take part in a judicial process. It comprises three main areas of analysis.

- Language and the Law studies matters such as comprehensibility of legal documents, analysis and interpretation of legal texts, multilingual matters in legal contexts or language minorities and the legal system.
- Language and the Legal Processstudies areas related to police interviewing, the analysis of judicial agents (police, judges, jury, etc.) or courtroom interpreting.
- Language as Evidenceinvolves the use of linguistic evidence in legal cases. The main areas of expert witness work are forensic speech comparison (speaker identification), forensic text comparison (authorship attribution) plagiarism analysis and trademark disputes.
What is a forensic linguist expert witness?
The forensic linguist expert witness carries works in issues related to the third area of research of forensic linguistics: language as evidence. Thus, whenever a linguistic sample, written or oral, is part of a judicial process or investigation, the work of a forensic linguist is necessary. The main areas of expert witness work include, among others:
- Forensic speaker identification
- Authorship attribution
- Plagiarism detection
- Linguistic analysis of trademarks
- Speaker or author profiling
